Our History
Atherton found its beginnings in 1914, with a young lady determined to provide care for ministers and missionaries who couldn’t afford the cost of retirement. Hannah Atherton Baldwin committed $40,000 to create a community of caring—one that today serves individuals from all walks of life. We remain a not-for-profit organization, ensuring that caring is placed first and foremost in our mission, and we look forward to another century of serving the Christian community of Southern California.
Atherton is licensed as a continuing care retirement community, and from only 10 residents in the early days, it has flourished to become one of the area’s largest and best established communities.
