Psalm 18:1-2
I love you, Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

Questions for reflection:

  • How are you troubled and pressed by the events of today?
  • What does it mean for you to run to Jesus today?

Thought for today:
Why was the image of the Rock of Refuge so significant for King David? Was it just a happy reassuring thought? No! This idea was the basis for all of David’s confidence and the explanation for all that David was able to accomplish in being the greatest of Israel’s kings. How can we be so sure that David felt so deeply? Because Psalm 18 is reproduced in its entirety in 2 Samuel, chapter 22, right at the end of David’s long life. The Lord was indeed David’s fortress Rock and hiding place. Throughout his life, he had been pursued by King Saul’s army; He had contended with the attempted overthrow and conspiracy of his son, Absalom; he had encountered endless troublemakers, like Sheba. On more than one occasion he had fled for his life, seeking refuge in a cave (See 1 Sam 22:1-7; 24:3-8). David lived with danger, stress, and hardship; but he rejoiced in the refuge of his relationship with God. There are times in life when we all need a cave of refuge. The Lord Jesus himself stands as our Rock and Refuge (Rom 9:33; 1 Cor. 10:4). Let your soul flee to him and be your Rock.
