Summer is a great time to enjoy the longer days, warmer weather, and fresh air but it’s also important to stay mindful of the heat, especially during outdoor activities. For older adults, particularly those with health concerns, heat and dehydration can be dangerous.

Here are a few practical tips for having a fun and safe summer:

  • STAY HYDRATED – Drink plenty of fluids and pack extra water even if you don’t feel thirsty. It’s important to drink water regularly throughout the day.
  • DRESS APPROPRIATELY – Wear light colored, loose-fitting clothing and a sun hat to keep you cool and protect your skin from getting burned
  • PROTECT YOUR EYES – Protect your eye health with UV sunglasses.
  • PROTECT YOUR SKIN – Use sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapply every 2 hours if you are outdoors.
  • ESCAPE THE HEAT – Plan activities indoors where air conditioning is available between 10am to 2pm when the sun is the strongest. A morning or evening walk is a good way to stay active.
  • BEWARE OF SYMPTOMS – Watch for signs know of heat exhaustion and heatstroke: dizziness, nausea, headache, confusion, or rapid heartbeat. Seek help if you are not feeling well.

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy, and safe summer 2025!
