Something to Think About: The Trinity and Us

Reflections by Chuck Cluff, Atherton resident since 2004

John 17:21-22
That they may all be one, even as You, Father are in Me and I in You, that they may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.

The whole concept of a trinity depicts God as not a loner. God likes others and apparently enjoys sharing everything with them; dreams, plans, responsibilities, friendships, relationships and more. When God created beings in his likeness, his own image, they would want the same things; that is, if they get in touch with who and how they were created to be. Theologians spend their lifetimes trying to understand these God relationships; God with himself which is the trinity thing, and God with all his created beings. Whatever these relationships are, however they play out, whatever the reality, extraordinary love is a major presence.

One view for understanding the trinity looks at the Father as the architect, the thinking, planning, idea person, imagining what can be brought into being. They see the Son in charge of building and constructing, the one who creates the settings wherein the Father’s ideas take form. The Spirit is recognized as the animator, bringing everything imagined of by the Father and created by the Son to life. The Spirit is the energy that makes everything work.

The Father, Son and Spirit work together on everything but each is in charge of his own specialty. Different groups of believers seem to have deeper feelings for one person of the trinity. They address their prayers accordingly. Some feel more drawn to the Father, some to the Son and others to the Spirit. God welcomes all love and attention. God has no ego issues. Love and oneness pervade. As we think of the trinity we are in touch with the basis for seeing all of God’s creatures as a big family. Jesus taught we are God’s children. It’s sad everyone doesn’t recognize and act like that. Everyone being family surely is still God’s dream. A lot of repair work is going on right now in the heavens and on earth to make this family concept come to fruition. No wonder Jesus found it so important to emphasize being one with God and one with each other. That’s how it was created to be.
