July 4th is called America’s birthday. Throughout the country we celebrated our nation with parades, picnics, and firewroks as friends and families gathered and gave thanks for our country. At Atherton we had a wonderful celebration this year as our residents gathered outsdie of our Café for BBQ and picnic food and some wonderful entertainment.

The celebration of America is the celebration of our country’s great democracy. In January of 1941, Roosevelt delievered a memorable State of union address. In it, he highlighted Four Freedoms which he believed ought to be afforded to all people htroughout the world: freedome of speech, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. Roosevelt said that the first two were secured by the First Amendment of the Consitituion, and hte last two are the benefits of democracy. Our democracy yields the belssings of economic opportunity, employment, social security, and promise of “adequate health care”.

This braod sense of freedom is woven into the fabric of our community as our residents deeply treasure our country and the opporunities it has afforded so many. We give thanks for God’s gift of America and the privilege and opportunity we have to live here. God Bless America.
