Encouraging Truths for Senior Living: Doubt your Doubts

By Doug Beyer, Atherton Resident since 2011

James 1:6
But when you pray, you must believe and not doubt at all. Whoever doubts is like a wave in the sea that is driven and blown about by the wind.

Questions for reflection and application:

  • What doubts do I have that limit my prayer life?
  • How has doubt made my life unstable?

Thought for today:

Doubt sees the obstacles—Faith sees the way!
Doubt sees the darkest night—Faith sees the day!
Doubt dreads to take a step—Faith soars on high.
Doubt questions, “Who believes?” Faith answers, “I.” (Author unknown)

Don’t doubt your beliefs and believe your doubts. Instead doubt your doubts and believe your beliefs. Frederick Buechner said, “Doubts are the ants in the pants of faith. They keep it awake and moving.” With your faith alive and moving use your doubts as a motivation to a deeper understanding of God and your place in his world. As you pray throughout this day do so confident that God hears and will respond graciously to your requests.
