Something to Think About: How Far Can We Count?
Reflections by Chuck Cluff, Atherton resident since 2004.
Eternity is forever, at least that’s what we’ve always imagined, but how do we grasp a concept like that? How do we imagine never ending? There is one way; we know we can always add another number. In fact, it is inconceivable to consider there won’t be another number just beyond the last one. Can we always add another, forever?
Will there ever be a total of all totals? A final total? Will there ever be a last number? Apparently not with God as a never-ending being, grander than numbers or totals. Forever is God’s nature. Ours too?
We are all included in this “forever” and have been since our spiritual birth. There may be no last total but there are many subtotals. Our own personal lives have a number of interludes, when we look back at what we have just achieved or gone through: Graduation from the different levels of education, places of employment over the years, when we retire. Many more. These occasions are all subtotals.
The end of this life is a subtotal. The point we call death is actually a new beginning; a move from a physical body on a physical world to a spiritual body in a spiritual world. And then what? Another number!
