Scripture: Psalm 23: 1b-2

“The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not be in want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside quiet waters.”

Questions for reflection and application:

  • Is there any fear about God’s provision for you in the future that you need to lay down?
  • Remember to thank God today for all of the ways He abundantly meets your needs?

Thought for today:

We live in a world in which many people are engulfed with fear and anxiety. Some fear the future; they’re anxious about what’s going to happen. Others fear even the present, uncertainty a has captured their hearts and they cannot imagine how to cope with the present circumstances in their lives. We worry about how our needs will be met. Seniors can be especially fearful as we see dwindling resources and rising expenses.

David says that a good shepherd leads his sheep to green pastures and quiet waters. David knew from experience that green pastures and quiet waters are not always easy to find, but a good shepherd goes all out for his sheep. The shepherd wants them to have the best. He knows exactly what they need, and will go to any length to provide it. Our God is a faithful Shepherd who promises to provide for our needs. Like a father who wants to give his children the best, in the words of Matthew 7, If we ask Him from bread, will He give us a stone? Trusting God’s good purposes for this is the antidote to fear. Just think of the lengths God is willing to go to make sure we have exactly what we need. In the words of Paul, “He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for all of us, will He not then, along with Him, graciously give us all things” (Romans 8:32).

Today let’s thank God for the blessing of supplying our basic needs, like grass and water for sheep. Let’s trust that He knows exactly where we are headed.
