Something to Think About: Silence
Reflections by Chuck Cluff, Atherton resident since 2004.
John 8:32
And you shall know the truth and the truth will set you free.
While on our spiritual journey a truth that brings great freedom is knowing God is always with us and for us. As a parent should always be there for the child so God is there for those who look to him. We are his children. Keeping this in mind is one of the most important truths. Does this knowing set us free? You bet; from worry, from fear, from anxiety, from sleepless nights. The truth that God is always there for us is huge for mental relaxedness and ease. The constant voice of the Spirit in the back or our minds that keeps saying “you are OK and you will continue to be OK” is so reassuring.
This voice of God is mostly heard when we go into silence. It is the still small voice Elijah heard after all the noisy stuff. Life’s storms and fires grab our attention like they must have Elijah’s. These noises leave us tied in knots and surely do nothing to help us hear God speaking: The news, everyday problems, noisy worship services, traffic, filled-up schedules. God speaks clearest when there is no interference. We hear his voice in deep meditation. We hear it in listening prayer. We hear it in bed, when all other distractions are shut down for the night. We hear it when our minds stop making so much chatter.
Would moments of total silence add to the worship experience? Certainly, it would if
we are like Elijah. Here is one of the truths that would set us free: learning to shut out
exterior and interior noise interruptions to allow the quiet voice of God to speak clearly.
